By Car

Travelling from northern Switzerland, the route is typically via Chur on the E43 motorway and then Route 19. When the Oberalp Pass is open (typically open from June to October), it's possible to drive via Andermatt on the E2 motorway and then over the Oberalp Pass on Route 19. If you are travelling from southern Switzerland or Italy, there are several options, of which most depend upon pass openings. The fastest would be to use the Lukmanier Pass (exit the E43 at Biasca), but whilst typically open all year around, it may be snow-covered. A longer alternative is driving via the San Bernadino (A13, then Route 19).

Example travel times are as follows. Travelling from Zürich takes about 2 hours. Travelling from Lugano takes about 1.5 hours using the Lukmanier Pass, or 2.5 hours via San Bernadino. From Milano it takes about 2.5 hours over the Lukmanier Pas or 3.5 hours using the San Bernadino route. Plan your route using Google Maps to make life easier!

Always check the alpine pass status prior to travel, as they can close owing to bad weather - it's worth verifying their opening using a website such as alpen-paesse.ch. Be aware that the passes are steep and have many curves, and during the evening or at night wildlife can be encountered (deer, badgers, etc.). The Lukmanier Pass is usually open in winter, but come prepared with snow chains as it can have a covering of snow in the upper areas. It can also have peculiar opening times - for example it can be closed during parts of the day for snow clearing.

By train

Disentis is serviced by the normal Swiss train network (SBB) and is also one of the stations on the spectacular Glacier Express line (see Rhaetian Bahn Glacier Express). With the Glacier Express it's possible to enjoy a scenic ride from locations such as Zermatt or St Moritz. Even with the normal train service, the journey up the Surselva valley is very pretty. Plan a route or purchase tickets using the SBB website.

Example journey times are as follows. From Zürich it takes about 2.5 hours. From Lugano it takes about 3 hours, and Milano about 4 hours.
